Getting started in Astronomy

Joining an astronomy club is an excellent starting point into the world of viewing and understanding more about the night sky. You can come along and see how you get on with different viewing aids without spending a lot of money on equipment which might not be suitable for you. A decent pair of binoculars and a chair are an excellent way to start to view the night sky and see what is possible without breaking the bank.

Where to buy telescopes and other equipment

We would not recommend buying a telescope from a department store or non-specialist retailer where equipment is advertised as “500x magnification”. This is unrealistic and can often lead to bad experiences and disappointment with the results. The links below are purely for guidence and do not constitute an official recommendation of any supplier from the Cody Astronomy Society. We would recommend using a specialist astronomy supplier such as one of the list below, who has specialist knowledge, can recommend equipment to meet your needs and can also provide support if you need it.
