The recent solar eclipse

Better late than never, here are some images taken at the observatory during the solar eclipse in Oct 2022. Please note all of these images were taken using professional solar filters which allow less than 0.01% of the light through, similar to a welder’s visor.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO LOOK AT THE SUN USING YOUR EYES OR ANY CAMERA, BINOCULARS OR TELESCOPE WITHOUT SUCH A FILTER - YOU WILL PERMANENTLY DAMAGE YOUR VISION OR BLIND YOURSELF.

Images kindly provided by John Hargreaves and Peter Randall.

The shadow of the moon obscures a portion of the sun. This was approximately the maximum level of the eclipse as seen from South East England.

A montage showing the start, middle and end of the eclipse.

Video of the eclipse taken using a digital camera and a solar filter.
